Leading by one shot over Thompson after carding an 8-under par 63 in the first round, Werenski posted a 4-under 67 in the second round at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota.

Thompson went one better, finishing with a 6-under par 66 and drawing level with Werenski, who is still looking for his first win on the PGA Tour.

Koepka, meanwhile, followed up his opening round of 70 with an even par 71, missing a birdie on the final hole that would have extended his stay into the tournament for the weekend. Instead, the four-time major champion missed the cut for the second time in the five events he has entered since the PGA Tour resumed last month after a three-month shutdown because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

With the world No. 6 missing the cut, the final two rounds of the 3M Open will not feature any player ranked in the world’s top-10 after world No. 4 Dustin Johnson withdrew after the first round because of back problems. Tommy Fleetwood, the world No. 12, also missed the cut after following up a par score in the first round with a 1-over 72 on Friday, bringing his first appearance on the PGA Tour since March to a premature end.

There was better news for Tony Finau, who followed up an opening round of 65 on Thursday with a 5-under 66 on Friday to move to within a shot of the leaders.

Finau, who as the current world No. 17 is the highest-ranked player left in the tournament, led after 36 holes at the Memorial Tournament last week before finishing eighth and is determined to avoid a repeat of the same scenario this weekend.

“When you shoot two rounds in the 60, it doesn’t matter how the conditions are playing. You know you’re playing good golf,” he told reporters after his second round.

“It’s been two really clean rounds for me. You can always build off that.”

Like Finau, Talor Gooch is also 11 under for the tournament, one shot ahead of China’s Xinjun Zhang and two clear of defending champion Matthew Wolff and Cameron Davis.

Wolff, Gooch and Zhang will head out together in the penultimate group of the day to start from tee No. 1 at 12:49 p.m. ET on Saturday, followed by Finau, Thompson and Werenski at 1 p.m. ET.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday.
